A Change is Gonna Come

I am trying to put into words how important this day is to me. Women have not always been given the right to vote via amendment. That only started in 1920. (As a side note, watch Iron Jawed Angels for an impressive look at the process endured). So voting to me, in honor of those women who fought with their lives and freedom, is a duty. A right that I take seriously. And in this election in particular, a right I take seriously as both a woman and a citizen. My entire life I have been jaded and left to feel that nothing I do matters. My voice is not important because the only voice heard in this country is the voice of the wealthy and powerful. I have never truly felt like the voices of the small and many could rise up and overthrow the voices of the few that rule the world. I grew up in a completely "red" state and felt my voice was never heard without judgment. Now, my vote has counted (I think) in Florida of all places. Last night they announced what until today has never been possible. A Black man will be the President of the United States. And while I am not Black, I see something so positive and amazing about it. So hopeful. You don't even get why symbolically the fact that Obama is Black is even a big deal. In your opinion...who cares if he is Black? And I hope that after this presidency, that is how you feel forever. I hope your life is filled with, he's Black and he's President, no big deal. I hope it is every day and normal rather than holy #*@%$! And in your day too, I hope a qualified woman is elected President and I hope lots of qualified women are elected. I hope the best of the best no matter gender, skin tone, religion, or sexual preference acquire the presidency. I hope this is the first step towards a change we have long hoped for. Where you will feel inspired by our leaders and know that anything is possible. Here's hoping a change is gonna come.
